to Richard Molesworth

Richard Molesworth Esq. England
Halifax Nova Scotia 15 January 1800

My Dear Sir,
You will have heard from (Dr.?) Oxley that the reform required, and indeed justly due to Government in the affairs of the Maroons, had reduced the medical department to a measure inadequate to his, or any other professional ____ support and, of course, was relinquished by him, and he returned to England with better expectations, which I sincerely hope have been realized – The transport ship Asia, intended to convey these deluded deceived people to Sierra Leone, from this situation of Health, comfort and prosperity, in ____ expectations of savage enjoyments has been unfortunately (deranged?) at Quebec and remains there this winter. This unexpected event was too late communicated here, to admit of any remedy and therefore the Maroons are still with us, altho ready to embark at one hours notice. They are in good health, and give me no further trouble then the can of (subsisting?) them and some casual attention to circumstances which must naturally generate among six hundred people, in society, I have so faithfully done my duty toward these people that I know not whether to lament that my hopes of their civilization is not to be perfected here, when the (projects?) justified zeal and (exertion?) or to indulge my charity with wishes that they may be made the instruments of conveying the light and knowledge they have acquired into the populous Regions they are going to, with for other views –

We are daily expecting arrival from England I look forward to preliminary measures for a general peace. If otherwise and war prevails – it is not to be feared this the pacific councils of the United States of America will be overpowered by French ____ in which event this peaceable Province would soon be a ____ we shall however be found in a state of preparation this the (indefatigable?) exertions of HRH our Military Commander in Chief and from the loyal spirit and raise faithful attachment of this increasing Province toward their King and his Government every active and ____ exertion ____ be expected.  Among the arrangements which are agitating here, I am informed that ____ writes to resign his appointment of Deputy Paymaster of the Forces in this District and that my worthy Friend Michael Wallace Esq applies to proceed to this office – Permit me my dear Sir to interest your friendly assistance in favour of this matter.  He is (Treasurer?) of this Province and a member of our General Assembly, faithfully attached to His King and Country – perfectly versed and ____ experience in business of unimpeachable integrity and indefatigable diligence and ____ to the most correct ____ economy and temperance – I pray you to convey this ____ of mine which I will ____ justify to whomever ____ the ____ and I shall esteem M. Wallace success as always demanding the ____ gratitude of ____ ____
____ Wentworth”
