Halifax, Nova Scotia, 23rd June 1798

My Lord Duke,
I beg leave, with the greatest deference to represent to Your Grace – That the General Assembly were assembled on the 8th instant for dispatch of the ordinary business of the Province – The first proceedings are herewith transmitted – No 1 & 2 – which contain such generous and wise sentiments of duty and attachment to His Majesty’s most sacred person and Government. That I am much gratified in the honor of presenting them.  As there is reason to apprehend – (Emissaries?) may be sent into this Province by His Majesty’s enemies with evil intentions – The Legislature have ____ an (Alien____?) to enable the Governor or Government to counteract and correct any such attempts which is more useful as I have some reason to apprehend attempts have been made by ...”
