The Africville Genealogy Society was formed in 1983 by Deborah Dixon-Jones, Linda Mantley and Brenda Steed-Ross (pictured right). These women were among the community of 400 people evicted from their homes during the relocation process in the late '60s.
Relocation separated the close friends since childhood, but did not break their spirit to be together.
Remembering the good times in Africville, they held an "Aquaintence Day" in what was by then Seaview Park, the former location
of Africville. Deborah insisted that the weekend should not be a one-time event and created the Society through registration and with the Province of Nova Scotia and incorporated it as a body.
While Deborah passed away in 1989, Linda and Brenda are still active on the Board. Irvine Carvery, another relocated resident, joined the Genealogy Society in the late '80s and he now serves as the Society's President.
