Back the Field

Now this was at one time owned by Jessica MacDonald. You best stay on her walkway – Jessie had quite the garden.

Back the Field looked over Tibby's Pond and was a place where we all played football. Played until sundown, or supper – whichever came first. It was a low place with two hills that in the center came right down to the water's edge.

That's where the Up the Road kids swam. And we could all swim.

From Back the Field, you could see all of Africville. Since it was on the water, part of it eroded each year. Jessica always said that she owned part of the Basin too, since that was where a lot of the Field ended up.
